The first time you taste an avocado, it does nothing for you. You really do not know what to make of it. It’s not sweet or tart. It’s more gooey than creamy. There may even be something repellent about it. You may think that it grew in the ground, like a potato, or on vine that trails along the ground, like a squash. The avocado is a shy fruit but, in the end, it grows on a tree and hangs down from heaven. It’s hard when you pick it, like a green rock. You must have patience to allow it to ripen. The avocado is a throwback tree, not of this world, since shyness and patience are its trademark qualities.
